Case Studies 3 & 4

Case: 69 year-old female, homemaker

   Condition: Diabetic, hypertensive, on multiple medications and 110 pounds overweight.

   Challenges: Emotional eater, eats when bored or angry. Her diet was high in fat and sugar and she did no physical activity.

   Reason for visit: She asked her doctor for a referral to a Registered Dietitian. Barbara was worried about getting complications of uncontrolled diabetes and blood pressure and knew she needed help losing weight.

   Treatment: I met with Barbara, discussed basic change strategies to normalize her eating and provide positive alternative responses to family problems rather than food. Her diet was very low in calcium, vitamins and minerals exacerbating her hypertension. Together we developed small dietary and physical activity options. I provided an interactive label reading activity with foods she typically purchased and offered alternative grocery store selections.

   Results: Within eight weeks, following her visits to me, her diet and physical activity resulted in a lowering of her A1C (average blood sugars)and blood pressure, elimination of one of her medications and a 20.5 pounds weight loss.

Case: 47 year-old, female homemaker

   Condition: Diabetes out of control. Client on maximum doses of diabetic medications and was 161 pounds overweight.

   Challenges: The woman ate one large, high fat, restaurant meal daily, but snacked throughout the day on high sugary, chocolate foods for comfort. Her emotional snacking increased when there was a family problem. She had no physical activity other than activities of daily living.

   Reason for visit: Her doctor recommended she seek help from a Registered Dietitian to lower her blood sugars and weight.

   Treatment: I met with Joan, discussed carbohydrate counting to normalize her blood sugars, and provide positive alternative responses to family problems rather than food. Together we developed small dietary and physical activity options, and provided healthier restaurant selections.

   Results: Within four months, following her visits to me, her diet and physical activity resulted in a lowering of her A1C (average blood sugars), her medication dosage decreased by 25% and she lost 15 pounds.
